TIP #1

We all have good habits and bad habits. Good habits begin with baby steps - little things you can to change your behavior so that you can change your life. Saving a part of your salary each month is a good habit. If you are not in the habit of saving even a small portion of what you earn, you need to develop the habit. Begin by doing these three simples steps:

Step One - Open up a saving account in the same bank that you have your checking account (a simple step, but one that many folks never take).

Step Two - Decide how much (even one dollar counts at this point) you want/need to save. If you're not sure, come up with a dollar amount that you would like to save and then put one-half of that amount in your savings account each month (half of what you would like to save is better than not saving anything.)

Step Three - Write yourself a savings account check each month - and deposit it as soon as you get your monthly salary check (so that it's out-of-sight, out-of-mind, and you aren't tempted to spend it because it's already in your savings account). OR have your savings amount automatically withdrawn from your checking account and deposited to your savings account each month.

Finally, remind yourself that change takes time. So begin your new savings habit and, if you miss a month, just pick it up again the following month. Good luck with your good habit!
